Our November 2017 Scholar of the Month is Mr. Peter Laboy Jr. Peter is currently completing his first semester at the prestigious Duke University. Last spring Peter was our top scholarship winner, receiving the Loti Dunn Scholarship which will provide him with $24,000 over four years of college. Peter reports that he is really happy at Duke – managing a full course load, a lot of reading and papers along with becoming a Duke Student Government Senator. Peter is currently considering a public policy major with a minor in cultural anthropology. He told us he has met amazing people and is having a really rewarding experience overall. Peter gave special thanks to Scholarship Fund Director of College Advising Margaret Feldman who helped him navigate financial aid, college essays and applications. Peter said “Thank you again for all of your help, Ms. Feldman. I wouldn’t be here without you!”
We asked Peter if he had some advice to share with members of the senior class who are applying for scholarships and applying to college now. Here’s what he told us:
“You should literally apply for every scholarship and to every school that you can. Never let fear of rejection prevent you from giving yourself the chance to succeed in life. You never know, you might be pleasantly surprised.”
