September Scholarship Opportunities List

Dear ACPS Students, Families, and Alumni,
Looking forward to welcoming you back to school on Tuesday! The Scholarship Fund of Alexandria office is open from 8am to 4:30pm Monday through Friday during the school year. Please feel free to stop by and see me in room A-115 (grades 11-12) or Ms. Osei in room A-121 (grades 6-10) for assistance with college, career, or financial aid planning. We look forward to meeting you and supporting your college dreams!

SENIORS:

  • It’s time to get started with the college process! Please review the Scholarship Fund’s “Guide to Applying and Paying for College” here http://ow.ly/TXwl30eQB6Q and stop by to visit me in A-115! I’d be glad to answer any questions, help you finalize your list of colleges, and work with you to brainstorm and perfect your college essays!
  • Save the date for the Scholarship Fund’s FAFSA Completion Workshop on Wednesday, October 4th!  Every senior should fill out the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid)  — a free, 45-minute application to qualify for money from the federal government, the state of Virginia, and colleges. Drop by room C-206 at TC anytime between 4pm and 7:30pm on October 4th to enjoy a free pizza dinner and get your FAFSA finished!FAFSA is an application that allows you to qualify for scholarships/grants, work-study, and loans; it does NOT obligate you to borrow money to pay for college. The application does NOT include essays and does NOT consider your grades. Please see ( http://ow.ly/zeHh30eQCOL ) for a list of documents to bring. Interpretation services will be provided with FACE Center registration.
  • Is applying early right for you? I’d be happy to help you consider whether you might be a good candidate to apply Early Action/Early Decision or to apply for the QuestBridge or Gates scholarship.
    • Early Action/Early Decision: Ivy Leagues and many highly selective colleges accept almost 50% of their freshman class through Early Action/Early Decision. Students who have a 3.75+ GPA and are enrolled in AP/DE courses may want to consider applying early.
      • Early Action (EA): Accepted students are not required to attend EA college
      • Early Decision (ED): Accepted students are required to attend ED college and withdraw all other college applications. Because ED is binding, it is important that students with financial need apply ONLY to colleges that guarantee to meet 100% of the student’s financial need (please see the list of colleges that guarantee to meet 100% of financial need here http://ow.ly/lruX30coMbm ). Only families that can afford to pay the full cost of college out of pocket should apply ED to colleges that are not included on the above list.
    • QuestBridgeStudents with high financial need (household income of $65,000 per year or less) who have a 3.75+ GPA and are enrolled in AP/DE courses should consider applying to QuestBridge, a 4-year, full-ride scholarship to highly selective partner colleges. Applications are due in September of senior year.
    • Gates: Students with high financial need (Pell-eligible) who have a 3.3+ GPA and are enrolled in AP/DE courses should consider applying to Gates, a highly selective, 4-year, full-ride scholarship for minority high school seniors. Applications are due in September of senior year.

HAMMOND STUDENTS:

  • Join “Aspire Higher” after-school club! We will meet from 3:15-4:15pm every Thursday in room D-206 at Hammond (starting October 5th). This fun and informational club will be led by 2013 TC Williams graduate, Abigail Osei. We’ll talk about the secrets to becoming a successful college applicant, how to get free money for college, and explore a variety of college and career options. Please contact Ms. Osei with any questions at [email protected] or (703) 824-6730, and see this flier for more information: http://ow.ly/hUdf30eQBLQ
