As a teacher at his alma mater, Michael has become a favorite among
students - partially because of his special ability to understand them,
where they are coming from, and where they have the potential to go.
He remembers graduating from T.C.Williams with dreams of
becoming a teacher, and realizing that his parents did not have the
money to send him to college. He also remembers what it was like to
feel that he was not "good enough" even to attend. The Scholarship Fund
offered assistance to Michael to help him reach his goals, and he
gained the confidence he needed to fulfill his dreams. "That
scholarship made me understand that my community cared, and they wanted
me to succeed," says Michael.
"I love helping students with some of the overwhelming
challenges that they can face every day," he says. Currently serving as
the crisis resource teacher in the Secondary Training and Education and
Program (STEP), Michael also sponsors the Habesha Student Association.
For all of these successes, he found a great deal of inspiration from
The Scholarship Fund, which he now serves as a donor and treasurer.
