Kamilah Lawson 2003 

Kamilah Lawson currently works at her alma mater as an administrative assistant while taking graduate classes at the University of Mary Washington. She is in the Master of Education program and hopes to be teaching English in a few years. She has also been active in Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., helping to organize their Biennial Jabberwock Pageant for young girls ages seven to ten and co-chairing their scholarship committee. Kamilah works part-time for The Scholarship Fund of Alexandria filling in where she's needed.

Before returning to Alexandria, Kamilah was a production assistant for ESPN Remote Production in Bristol, Connecticut. In her work at ESPN, she edited and wrote scripts, interviewed professional athletes, and edited graphics. Whether it's the Women's National Basketball Association, college basketball or baseball, the NFL Draft, figure skating, or the Great Outdoor Games, Kamilah was there!

Before joining ESPN, Kamilah was a production assistant for a diverse array of television shows including "America's Most Wanted," "Final Justice," and Frank Herzog's outstanding local program "Remember the Titans." While in college, she wrote and produced a 30-minute documentary, "A Dream Deferred: The Dwayne Bryant Story." She was a member of the Washington Association of Black Journalists.

In 2000, Kamilah rose to the challenge of giving back to the Alexandria City Public Schools by working as a permanent substitute teacher. She taught ninth grade mathematics to special education and emotionally challenged students. She recognized that teachers can't work in a vacuum and worked with students' families in order to give them a greater chance to succeed.

It is this strong work ethic, one that Kamilah learned years ago at T.C. Williams and was able to realize with the help of her SFA scholarship, that defines her to this day.
