Douglas Garcia, Class of 1997, was born in San Miguel, El Salvador, as the youngest of five Garcia brothers who came to the United States in search of opportunity. Doug followed a strong family tradition of recognizing the value of hard work and education. His father worked first as a dishwasher, then chef, and later opened his own family restaurant where Doug and his brothers helped out when they were not studying.

The Scholarship Fund of Alexandria was established in 1986 with the aim of ensuring that all academically qualified T.C. Williams High School seniors have access to financial resources so that they can attend college, vocational or technical school upon graduation.
The program is two-fold:
- Students and their families receive counseling on how to access all federal, state and private financial aid to education assistance in filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
- The Scholarship Fund of Alexandria awards last dollar scholarships of $2,000-$5,000 to help fill the gap when the expected family contribution and aid received from other sources is not enough. Studet award recipients are encouraged to reapply for renewal scholarships while they are in school.
In addition to Scholarship Fund of Alexandria and renewal awards, both supported from the general fund, the Fund oversees more than 100 memorial and commemorative scholarships established to honor individuals, businesses or other organizations in the Alexandria community.
During the fiscal year ending June 30, 2008, the Fund awarded $372,000 in aid to 224 members of the T.C. Williams Class of 2008 and $366,499 to 174 former award recipients still in school and demonstrating need of financial assistance. Over the past twenty years, the Fund has awarded more than $5.5 million to over 2,900 T.C. Williams students to help fund their post secondary education.
You may contribute to the general fund to help provide need-based scholarships; establish a named scholarship; join the Business Educator Partners Program; become an Honor Roll Donor; or pledge to the annual telethon. All of your donations will brighten a young person's education future.
