My family members are Titans through and through—my husband and I both graduated from T.C. Williams in 1980 and our two sons graduated from T.C. in the past five years. I have been actively involved in organizations that support ACPS and Alexandria children and families for the past 20 years, including the Scholarship Fund since 2003. Making phone calls, attending the Gala and joining the Gala committee are just a few of the ways I supported the Scholarship Fund prior to joining the Board of Trustees in 2009.
I am consistently amazed by the community support for this program. It is evident that alumni, parents, friends, community members, and businesses feel just as strongly about the importance of assisting qualified Alexandria graduates access higher education. Each year, we have 1,600+ individual donors who donate time and money toward this cause. Since its inception in 1986, the Scholarship Fund has awarded over $11 million in scholarships to over 4,000 deserving TC Williams graduates.
This year alone, the Fund awarded almost $400,000 in scholarships to 151 members of the Class of 2014, and provided over $500,000 in renewal scholarships to prior graduates. The Fund's staff also provides valuable and much needed assistance in helping students and their parents navigate the labyrinth of financial aid forms which help students obtain additional financial aid from other sources, like private scholarships and federal and state financial aid. But, as we all know, the cost of higher education continues to rise and the possibility of going to college seems farther and farther away to students who lack the financial resources to pay the increasing costs. I feel very passionate about the work done by the Scholarship Fund of Alexandria—I know I would not have been able to attend college after graduating from T.C. had I not received scholarship assistance.
That's where our supporters come in! Contribute now, with the knowledge that 92 cents of every dollar you donate to the Scholarship Fund of Alexandria will go directly toward helping those T.C. Williams graduates achieve a higher education so they can unlock their potential and go on to do great things.
