The Scholarship Fund of Alexandria, 2009 Award Recipients
The mission of The Scholarship Fund of Alexandria (SFA), through its relationships within the community, is to encourage and assist the students of the Alexandria City Public Schools by providing them with the necessary resources to pursue a college or post- secondary education.
I am a proud, class of '85, graduate of TC Williams High School. Unfortunately, that was one year before the Scholarship Fund of Alexandria was created — by a group of hard charging, engaged parents who wanted to support and promote higher education for TC Williams graduates. As such, I didn't discover this amazing charitable organization until years later, when my fellow TC alumn, Stephanie Clayton, encouraged me to attend the Scholarship Fund of Alexandria's Annual Spring Gala under a huge tent at the Woodlawn Plantation in 2001. It was such a wonderful event (despite all the rain!), that I joined the Gala Committee and worked on the Telethon the following year. Since 2004, I have been a member of the Board of Trustees, and this year I am honored to serve as the Chair of the Board.
My passion for the Scholarship Fund has only increased as I have seen the outpouring of support from parents, alumni, businesses and community members. I have also witnessed the pride of past scholarship recipients who have gone on to have amazing careers (including teachers, doctors, lawyers, and artists to name a few) as they come back to be honored as our "Portraits of Success" at our Annual Spring Gala. "Just can't hide that Titan Pride"!
What an incredible grass-roots organization to have right here in Alexandria aimed at benefiting Alexandria's own, Alexandria's best, and Alexandria's future — the graduates of TC Williams High School. Since its inception in 1986, the Scholarship Fund has awarded over $9 million in scholarships to 4,000 deserving TC Williams graduates. This year alone, the Fund awarded $380,000 in scholarships to 167 members of the Class of 2012, and provided over $540,000 in renewal scholarships to prior graduates. The Fund's staff also provides valuable and much needed assistance in helping students and their parents navigate the labyrinth of financial aid forms to assist students in obtaining additional financial assistance from other sources as well.
But as we all know, the cost of higher education continues to rise and the possibility of going to college seems farther and farther away to students who lack the financial resources to pay the increasing costs. That's where you come in! Contribute now, with the knowledge that 92 cents of every dollar you donate to the Scholarship Fund of Alexandria will go directly toward helping those TC Williams graduates achieve a higher education where they can unlock their potential and go on to do great things like the many Portraits of Success before them.
When I was at TC, one of my favorite cheers we would scream from the bleachers at every basketball and football game was "T.C. Titan Express, All Aboard!" (My fellow classmates and I are still known to shout it out now and then!) Back then, it was a great expression of solidarity and Titan Pride during those times when we came together to support our fellow Titans in their fight to win on the field. Now it's time for us to come together to support our fellow Titans in their fight to win in the classroom! T.C. Titan Express — Are you on Board?!
